Rewriting History
I have been away in Central America (about which observations will be made soon) but I'm currently thinking about how people change the historical narrative in collusion with the media and somehow think the rest of us are too stupid to figure it out, or will be silenced due to social disapprobation. I have not just had recent personal experience of this (death of ex partner, a former Marxist who ascended to the House of Lords and became a close personal friend of Charles Windsor) which I will address in the forthcoming memoir ‘Barbie Goes to VietNam’; but it is being done on a grand scale to Russia and the former Soviet Union. You don’t need to be a Marxist/Communist/apologist to see how breathtakingly dishonest and hypocritical it was to exclude Russia from the commemoration of the liberation of various concentration camps when it was Russia which liberated them! Meanwhile Germany which created the camps and carried out ‘the Final Solution’ was participating! Similarly all those deluded enough to think that Britain singlehandedly defeated Naziism with a little late help from the United States are overlooking the little fact that 20 million Russians died and that it was Hitler’s attempt to conduct a war on two fronts, culminating in Germany’s defeat at Stalingrad which played no small part in bringing the Third Reich to its knees. This last week we have all been treated to various commemorative events celebrating VE Day-yet there was-no joke- a Ukrainian regiment marching down Whitehall! Er, Ukraine, like Croatia, fought on the side of the Nazis. In fact, there is still a Ukrainian regiment, the Azov Regiment, which has as its logo a swastika! Despite the fact that the United States seems to be inhabiting a parallel world in which the genius masquerading as the president can do no wrong, I humbly return to one of the first things every American schoolchild used to learn, about George Washington who chopped down a cherry tree and when asked by his father what had happened, said ‘I cannot tell a lie.’ How mindbogglingly brilliant it would be if any of our politicians today were such sticklers for the truth?
